  1. All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race.  The inspection points are as follows:
    1. The car must have been made during the current year (the year in which the derby is held).  The car should be substantially built by the scout.
    2. Materials.  Axles, wheels and body wood shall be provided from the official BSA Pinewood Derby kit (or an official BSA wheel replacement kit). Materials from the official kit may be supplemented but not replaced.
    3.  Width.  The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.
    4.  Length.  The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
    5. Weight.  The weight of the car shall not exceed 5.0 ounces.    The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal only, provided additional material is securely built onto the body.  No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car.
    6. Clearance.  The car must run properly on the track.  (minimum 3/8” clearance from the track surface, and minimum 1 ¾” inside wheel to wheel clearance)
    7. Springing.  The car shall not ride on any type of springs.
    8. Lubricants.  Only dry lubricants such as graphite or powdered Teflon “white lube” will be allowed for lubricating the wheels.  Lubricants may not foul the track.  In the interest of fairness, only one lubrication is allowed before the beginning of the race.
    9. Details.  Details such as the steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, and interior details are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width, and weight specifications.
    10. Attachments.  The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.
    11. Inspection. Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete.  The inspectors have the right to disqualify those cars that cannot meet these specifications.  The official number will be marked on the car by the inspection committee.
  2. If a car is unable to pass the inspection, it may enter in the Open Class category.  Open Class cars do not have a weight limit and may be modified at will, but must be able to travel on the track without damaging the track, and no use of chemicals or flames is allowed.  The Open Class category is open to Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, parents, siblings and other friends of scouting.
  3. Only official Derby personnel will be allowed to handle the cars after inspection.  Cars will be returned to the drivers upon the completion of the race.
  4. Each heat will be announced.  All spectators must remain behind the barriers.
  5. The car whose nose is over the finish line first is the winner of that heat.  Place spotters and/or race timer device will select the first, second, and third place finishers.
  6. If a car leaves the track, runs out of the lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc. the heat will be re-run.  If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, that car is disqualified and automatically loses that race.  If on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat will run again for a third time, but without the disqualified car.
