Century of Values Tour ....... is on the Road

The Thumb District (Huron and Tuscola counties) is celebrating Scoutings 100th Anniversary this summer with the Century of Values Tour. An exhibition with 18 stops in the two county region. It consists of a 53 foot semi trailer, a tent, several canopies and much more. Mike Herrington, Senior District Executive says, " we want the tour to tell our story of the past 100 years and much more."

The Tour stops will consist of one day visits (for the most part) to festivals starting in early June with the last stop the second weekend in October. The Century of Values Tour camp includes a little bit of everything that  a 100th Anniversary celebration for a youth organization should have. Some history and some fun and a trading post.  ( story continues below schedule)

  •         The History.......  a museum,  made up of home-made shadowboxes. Almost every Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop in the two county district have made a display. They are packed full with  artifacts, pictures, trinkets and newspaper clippings from the decades that Scouting has exhisted in the district.  The oldest document on display is the Charter for the Boy Scouting Troop in Owendale from 1929.
  •       The Fun....... games, activities and crafts. They include: a monkey bridge, a rubberband shooting gallery, fishing game plus a climbing wall. Youngsters will also have fun making one of many take home projects.... a woodcraft project or a leathercraft project.

Kim Glaspie, volunteer, District Chairman says, " scouting is about doing, and this tour will show children and adults alike,  what some of the things they can do in scouting.

  • The Trading Post ........  it would'nt be a Scouting encampment without one. Vistors to the Century of Values Tour Exhibition will find the Trading Post in a big dark green tent in the back of the facility. Its here, one can select from some great Scouting merchandise and memoribilia including: Century of Values Tour T-shirts, Century of Values Tour polo shirts, Century of Values Tour frisbees, Century of Values Tour water,  Scouting 100th Anniversary shopping bag.

With 100 years of adventure behind it, Scouting has a tremendous alumni so one thing the Century of Values Tour wants to accomplish is to get some of its former Scouts to help in the next century. Bill Jackson, chairman of the tour, says ”we want to continue the journey of scouting with help from folks – men and women who participated in Scoutings program as youth – and/or who, now as adults share in the idea of the BSA values and of shaping young lives.”

Jackson says the tour will be staffed by Scouts and Scouters from local communities.” We wants today’s youth, who are Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, to be part of this and represent this great program to others who might want to join. It will be a lot of fun for everyone, young and old alike, that’s what Scouting is all about”.

The project was financed with sponsorships from over 4 dozen area businesses, Scouters and Scouting families. The 53 foot semi trailer was donated to the Thumb District by Bartnick Service of Cass City. When the "Tour" is over all items used in the exhibition, excluding the trailer, will be auctioned off to the highest bidders. An auction time and place, sometime in October will be announced at a later date.
