Quality District 2001 -Thank you for all of your help in finishing ahead on our membership goals. There were a lot of last minute efforts this year that proved very successful. We went back into the schools in November and picked up enough youth to go over the mark on our cub-scouting objectives. Our district crossed over twenty Cubs into the Boy Scout program. We welcome our new Boy Scout unit in Kingston. That put us over the mark on traditional units. Thanks for your help giving our youth a quality program. Our new commissioners staff resulted in quality, too! Looking forward to 2002!

The Klondike Derby at Evergreen Park was a great success. Sun and Surf in the Tropics was our theme. We had a nice patch and hope everyone had a good time. The Webelos were invited to join in the event that day. Thanks to Dean Avery and Co. for their efforts.

We had five Scouts that sold over a thousand dollars in popcorn from the Thumb District. Congratulations to Ryan Rowley and Jacob Kennedy from Pack 3595, Trevor Lewis from Pack 3586, Arza Webb III from Troop 562, and Chad Hornbacher from Pack 3584, two years running, sold the most in the district. Good job, Chad!

On March 1st we will be having our Cub Scout Lock-In at the Cass City Middle School. The event will run from 7 pm to 1 am. The theme this year is "Off to the Races". We have a real cool patch for the participants. We are limiting this event to the first one hundred Scouts that sign up. The ratio needed will be five Scouts for one adult. We have eight great events for the boys to enjoy. Make sure that your unit pre-registers early.

Our District Leadership Banquet is set for March 2nd at the Ubly Heights Golf and Country Club. Congressman Jim Barcia is our keynote speaker this year. The eagles from our district will attend and will be recognized by the Congressman. Table captains are secure and looking for good attendance. Last year, we had great success with the FOS dinner. We are hoping to raise a great deal of our community campaign that evening. Thanks to all involved in helping organize the dinner and thanks to Bill Jackson for chairing this event.

Commissioners Conference is scheduled for March 16th. We hope to have our district commissioner staff to participate this year. It is a great way to fire up our staff for 2002.

Thumb’s District Dinner is slated for March 23rd at the Cass City High School cafeteria. It will be a potluck dinner with social hour beginning at 6:00 pm, followed by dinner at 7:00 pm. The program will follow the dinner. Send RSVP to Gary Avery at 989-763-7432. This is a great evening for all Scouters. Please plan on attending. See who will achieve the District Award of Merit this year. We also have a guest speaker for the evening. Hope to see you there.

Scouting for Food’s annual campaign is scheduled for April 13th and April 20th. Last year, we collected more food than the previous year. We hope to do the same this year. This is our greatest exposure to your communities. The food collected goes directly into food pantries in our towns. This has a direct effect on the community and it touches lives on the local level. The pantries are low this time of year after the holidays. It will be a great time to fill them up for the coming year!

DE Minute: It has been a pleasure helping you put the Thumb District ahead of last year. Achieving our goals would have been harder without the hundreds of great volunteers in the Thumb District. Congratulations!! Looking forward to a growing future.
