Chair: Shelly Riedlinger MARCH APRIL CONDUCTING A PARENTS NIGHT FOR YOUR POST Conducting a "Parent's Night" in April for your post should be a annual occurrence in your calendar of activities. Parents want to know what their son or daughter has been "up to" and this represents the best opportunity to give them an update on the post's progress through the year. Parents respect and appreciate the time that you as a professional, volunteering your efforts, have taken to give their child valuable hands-on experience in a career field. Parent's Night also serves as a showcase for teens to share their new skills and knowledge with their parents. They should be an integral part of planning and hosting this night. Try to keep the night fun and light-hearted. Serve refreshments and have a decorative atmosphere. The purpose is not only to show what the post has done in the past, but what it could do in the future... This night also is the perfect opportunity to solicit parents for their help with post sessions and activities. The more parents can get involved with the post, the easier your job is as a post Advisor. BASIC TRAINING FOR ADVISORS Another Basic Training for Advisors is scheduled for March 9th 10:00 am - 2:00 pm at the Council Service Center. This training is designed for any adult leader that has not been through "basic training". Training covers issues such as working with youth, potential problems and suggested activities. Registration is required! To register, just call the Council Service Center at 695-5593 or 662-4464 by March 4th to say that you will be coming. It is THAT simple! All untrained advisors should take advantage of this opportunity (of course!) because it will help them run their posts more smoothly. Not only will you receive help and advice on livening up your meetings, but you can get program ideas, suggestions for improving youth attendance and participation as well as valuable safety, motivation and youth protection info. If this date is not convenient for your schedules, please contact us so that we can find a time that is best to conduct this necessary training with you. Basic Training takes about 3-4 hours to complete. TOOLS FOR POSTS Posts have a wide variety of helpful tools to manage their post in the upcoming year. The service center has videos giving overviews of youth leadership roles and adult advisor leadership roles. These "fast start" videotapes give a good outline of youth officer as well as adult leaders' responsibilities in their roles in a successful Exploring post. Please contact the Service Center if you are interested in seeing one or both of these videos. BONUS - Coming soon - Advisor Training on CD!! If you would like a copy of this introductory training on CD, please call the Service Center to reserve your copy today! UPCOMING NATIONAL CONFERENCES National Law Enforcement Conference.
