Friends of Scouting -- United We Stand

The Lake Huron Area Council kicked off its 2002 FRIENDS OF SCOUTING – UNITED WE STAND campaign on January 28 at the Auburn – Williams Fire station on Midland Road in Auburn. Many thanks to the volunteers and the firemen who attended this event.

During the Friends of Scouting campaign, each Pack and Troop is encouraged to conduct a FOS presentation at a February or March meeting. Your District Family FOS Chairperson will be contacting you to finalize the date for your presentation. To have an effective FOS campaign in your unit, here are some things you need to do:

  • Appoint an FOS chairperson for your unit. This person will oversee the program in your unit and follow up with families who are not able to attend the meeting where the FOS presentation is done.
  • Establish an FOS presentation date which enables the most families to attend, a Pack Blue and Gold banquet or a Troop Court of Honor
  • The presentation will take ten minutes maximum.
  • Have the Unit FOS Chairperson introduce the District FOS presenters
  • Explain to the parents that it costs $125 to support one boy in the Scouting program for one year.
  • This cost includes leader training, camp maintenance, communications, insurance, and district support.

Introducing the new FOS recognition plan: All donors will receive a FOS window sticker, those contributing $50 or more will receive a FOS Window Decal for their car or home. Gifts of $125 or more will be recognized with a FOS US flag lapel pin. Donors of $250 or more will be recognized with various plaques.

Your Lake Huron Area Council is providing the boys in your unit with an exciting and quality Scouting program. Please help the Council "Stand United" and keep this vibrant program growing through your support of the 2002 FRIENDS OF SCOUTING.

Troop Leader Training (TLT)

Troop Leader Training (TLT) is a seven-day outdoor experience for current and future leaders. The course has two purposes, which will benefit your troop. First, the Scouts will be introduced to eleven Skills of Leadership, which will help them make more effective leadership decisions. While completing their daily responsibilities and activities, Scouts will practice these leadership skills on each other by exchanging roles and sharing activities. Second, Scouts will hone and polish their Scout craft skills with emphasis on how to teach and share these skills with other Scouts in their patrol and troop. The Patrol Method is used extensively at Troop Leader Training.

A Scout may attend the 2002 Troop Leader Training Conference if he:
... is a First Class Scout or above
... is a current or future troop Junior Leader
... is a minimum 13 years old on June 17, 2002
... has attended at least one long term (six days and nights) Boy Scout camping experience, like Summer Camp.
... has participated in a unit or District Junior Leader Training Workshop
... has developed good camping and cooking skills
... has his Scoutmaster’s approval

The course will take place at Paul Bunyan Scout Reservation, June 16-22, 2002. The cost is $120.00 if full fee paid by May 3, 2002, $145.00 if full fee or balance paid after May 3, 2002 ($60.00 deposit at time of registration reserves a spot for a Scout)

The course is limited to 64 participants. Registration will be taken on a first come first served basis. Contact the Scoutmaster, Jack Beamish at 989-835-5832 for any special concerns. Upon receiving registration and full payment an information packet will be sent to participants. Registration information is available through roundtables and the council service center.

Commissioner’s Corner

Summertime is an excellent time to put the "outing" in Scouting. Lake Huron Area Council has two great camps in Paul Bunyan Scout Reservation and Camp Rotary. Plus with the various District Day Camps and Order of the Arrow opportunities for camping, it should be very easy for units to be in the "outing". One of the important criteria for "Quality Unit" status is the camping and outdoor component. It should be easy to meet this requirement.

Only 58% of LHAC units achieved Quality Unit status, 2% below the needed standard. Lack of trained leaders and program were two of the major components where many of our units fell short. We in Lake Huron Area have many wonderful training sessions offered each year and our camping opportunities are beyond reproach. Each unit is asked to complete and submit a Quality Unit report with their charter each year. That is the time when each unit should review their program and determine what needs to be changed, if anything, to offer a quality program. The youth in our units deserve to be offered quality programs with trained leaders. With your dedication, we can do it!

Looking down the road, LHAC is the host Council for the 2002 Wood Badge Course for the 21st Century. Wood Badge is a super way to receive high quality supplemental training in leadership skills. Also, for LHAC Commissioners we have the Annual Commissioners Conference on March 16th at Camp Rotary. David Harrison has put together a great program for this conference. Plan to be there. And also in September, we have the annual Michigan College of Commissioner Science. This is a premier supplemental training session for all commissioners, and a wonderful opportunity to rub shoulders with fellow commissioners from across the State.

Summer is just around the corner, think camping, canoeing, hiking, spelunking, and high adventure. In a nutshell think Scouting!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Luncheon Held at Crown Plaza in Saginaw

On January 21, over 250 Scouting youth and leaders celebrated the life and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by marching through the streets of Saginaw and participating in either a youth symposium or an adult recognition luncheon.

The Lake Huron Area Council is pleased to be a co-sponsor of this Unity Celebration in Saginaw alongside Consumers Energy, Alpha Phi Alpha, the Bridge Center for Racial Harmony and Delta College. Nearly 300 youth and leaders attended the youth symposium and learned about the struggle for Civil Rights from Judge Terry Clark and Mrs. Vera Mack. At the recognition luncheon, the Council presented the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award to Amos Oneal of the United Way of Saginaw County, John Sivey, of Wright K Technology Inc, and Gerald Dawkins, Superintendent of Saginaw City Schools. All of these outstanding candidates have contributed greatly to the advancement of Scouting in Saginaw and other urban areas. Congratulations to all for a job well done.

A Tribute to a Friend
Lake Huron Area Council Memorial/Tribute Fund

Words too often inadequately express the sentiment we feel at the death of a friend or the joy we feel when a friend is honored with special recognition. No finer tribute can be paid than to encourage a boy to live the life of a Scout and thus perpetuate the high principles you admire in your friend.

A contribution to the Lake Huron Area Council Memorial/Tribute Fund is the perfect tribute. It will be put in trust so that it continues to give in perpetuity.

Scouting for Food 2002

30 million American, including 6 million children, go hungry at some time every month … and that today there are more hungry people in our country than at any time during the past 40 years?

The purpose of Scouting for Food is to help meet the needs of the hungry and expose Scouts to the highest ideals of the Scouting movement through a practical and dramatic experience in the principle of the "Daily Good Turn."

Scouting for Food is a community good turn, which helps to instill the concept of community service. This is accomplished through the commitment of thousands of volunteers that reach out and assist those in need. The seed of helpfulness to others may then blossom and positively affect future generations and countless lives. Through the collection of food, less fortunate families are provided a brighter tomorrow. This is accomplished through the commitment of thousands of volunteers that reach out and assist those in need. The seed of helpfulness to others may then blossom and positively affect future generations and countless lives.

Our goal is 100% participation this year! LHAC will once again provide bags to distribute and free patches for all youth participants. All units should have received a SFF information packet in mid-February. If you haven’t signed up to participate in Scouting for Food, contact your district chairperson or LHAC and do so today.

Our goal is 100% unit participation this year!
