Happy New Year! The 2004 Friends Of Scouting (FOS) Campaign is kicking off in January with the Council Kickoff set for January 26. Each Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, and Venture Crew is being asked to conduct a FOS Presentation at a unit meeting during February or March when most of the parents are in attendance. Many Cub Scout Packs do this at the Blue & Gold Banquet. The FOS presentation takes 10 minutes and the presenter will inform the parents about the Scouting program and offer them an opportunity to help provide the cost of Scouting for their son. It costs $125 to provide a quality Scouting program for one Scout for one year. In 2003, only 1,300 of our 10,000 families made an average gift of $75 each to the FOS campaign. Imagine if all of our families supported FOS. The Council would be able to provide a quality Scouting program to thousands more youth! To schedule your unit's FOS presentation, contact your District Executive or your District FOS Chairperson.

The 2004 Scouting for Food Campaign is an opportunity we have to participate in a meaningful community service to aid those who are hungry. We will restock the supplies of non-perishable food items of local food banks and pantries. We will be helping numerous families, elderly, children, and homeless people each week. Supplies are always needed at this time of year, especially after a long, hard winter. Help make this a banner year by having your unit participate. At the February Roundtable, each participating unit will be asked to designate an area where they would like to distribute bags. Bags will be given to your unit at the March Roundtable by your district chairperson. On Saturday, April 17, Scouts all over the LHAC Area will place a bag on the doors of as many homes as possible in their area. Scouts will return to collect donated food items on the next Saturday (April 24). Scouting For Food is a National Boy Scouts of America "Good Turn" Project and YOUR unit's ideal service project. Hunger in Michigan is real. More than 215,000 people will go to bed tonight with no food to eat. We can make a difference! Contact your District SFF Chair for more information. Collect food door-to-door in your neighborhoods, schools, and churches and at local businesses! *NEW IDEA! Support Scout efforts by creating a drive at your own place of work. Involve employees in the drive and collect food throughout the month through an internal competition.
IMPORTANT DATES: Saturday, April 17, 2004 - Distribute your SFF bags in your area. Saturday, April 24, 2004 - Collect all SFF bags and deliver food to your local collection site. SERVICE TO OTHERS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT YOUTH LESSONS!
For more information, contact your district Scouting for Food Chair or the Scout Service Center.
