Each year the Lake Huron Area Council awards 4- $500 college scholarships to council Eagle Scouts that are seniors in high school or college freshman or sophomores under 21 yrs of age. A committee evaluates the applications submitted based on Scouting positions held, service to Scouting, community, school, and church, awards earned and need. This years recipients and their bios are below.
2010 Eagle Scholarship Recipients
Alexander D. Farris- Alex graduated from Frankenmuth HS in 2009 and is currently a Rotary Youth exchange student in Osnabruck, Germany. Alex served his troop- 275 as SPL, ASPL, Grubmaster, PL, and is active in the OA. He was also President and Vice-president of his Venture crew-7275. Alex served as a CIT at Camp Rotary, attended the National Jamboree in 2005, and Philmont Scout Ranch in 2006. He has volunteered in his community and school as a Bavarian Festival Volunteer, Volkslaufe (peoples race) volunteer, SADD, German Club Chancellor, and participated in the Spanish Club. He was active in tennis, basketball, soccer, 4-H, on the Debate team, and Forensics team to name a few school activities. He has received the following honors: Academic all-conference, lower Thumb League first place for Debate, Tennis team MVP, and National Honor Society member. Alex plans to move back to Michigan and enroll at the University of Michigan, Columbia, Princeton, or Cornell Universities next fall to study anthropology or political science. Alex is currently in Germany and could not be present today.
Christian M. Knutson- Christian is a senior at Swan Valley HS. He has served as SPL, ASPL, PL, Scribe, QM, and OA rep for his troop. He is a brotherhood OA member, has logged over 100 days and nights camping and has volunteered at numerous district activities over his scouting career. He has volunteered at his church and in his community assisting with feeding the homeless, teaching Sunday school, assisting with youth worship, assisting the Girl Scouts, and using his special skill as a bugler on many occasions serving veteran organizations at memorial and other services. Christian’s accomplishments include: Perfect attendance at school- all 4 years, National Honor Society, Law Day Lawyer participant, Lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, and member of the 101st Airborne Division Association as a historian. He has also earned all 4 religious awards for his faith in Scouting. Just recently, Christian was selected as the State of Michigan, 2010 American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year. He has applied to West Point with a goal of becoming an Officer in the United States Army. If not accepted, he will enroll at CMU as an ROTC Cadet and work towards a U. S. and World History Degree.
Kevin Lloyd Kula- Kevin is a senior at Bay City All Saints HS. He has served Scouting as Asst Scoutmaster, SPL, ASPL, PL, and O.A. Chapter and Lodge Officer to name a few. He has been very active as a Scout attending Philmont, National Jamboree, NOAC, Governors Honor Guard for Mackinaw Island, NYLT, and CIT at Camp Rotary 3 years. He will be serving on staff for the upcoming National Jamboree. In his school, Kevin is active in many clubs and groups including: Key Club, Student Council, is Yearbook editor, and served as class president. He has volunteered in his church and for several community organizations such as: Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, Food for Faith Soup Kitchen, Relay for Life, St Stans AC volunteer committee, and is active as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister to name a few. His awards include: High honor roll, perfect attendance, Citizenship Award, Tennis Team Captain, and Bay City Leadership Award. He has also earned the religious awards for his faith. Kevin plans to attend Central Michigan University to study political science and pre-law. Afterwards, he would like to attend the University Of Michigan to become a lawyer.
Cameron Thorp- Cameron is currently a freshman living on campus at Saginaw Valley State University. He has served Scouting as JASM, SPL, ASPL, PL, OA Rep, and is currently an Asst. Scoutmaster in his troop. Cameron also served as Patrol Leader at the 2005 National Jamboree. He attended NOAC and has served on Camp Staff 2 summers at Paul Bunyan Scout Reservation. He has assisted at the Merit Badge College, and was a key presenter at the Ojibway District Friends of Scouting Breakfast. Cameron was active in his school and church in Drama Club, Band, Choir, and was school newspaper editor and Ad salesman. He has volunteered with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, veteran groups- flag placings at local cemetery’s ,Caro Rotary Club, Thumb Community Theater, St Michael’s Lutheran Church in band and choir, and is a blood donor. Cameron is currently active with the SVSU Theater. His awards and honors include: Tri-County honors band, (served as field commander) honors choir, Drama Club President, high school best Thespian, and honorary Veteran of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Cameron comes from a family of Eagle Scouts including his father, 2 uncles, a cousin and second cousin. After graduating from SVSU, Cameron would like head out East and apply his communications degree in a career.
