Serving the Youth of Northeastern Michigan

Scouting For Food- Good Turn Coming Soon!

Our Scout Oath includes the promise “…to help other people at all times.” And the Boy Scouts of America vision statement contains a goal focusing on serving America’s communities and families with our quality values-based program. Scouting was founded on the principle of “do a Good Turn daily.” Our members conduct service projects to benefit others throughout the year. In fact, during 2009, our council conducted Scouting for Food, and we collected over 60 tons of food for the hungry. Good Turn for America provides the framework in which to highlight this service project and more.

We know our packs, troops, and crews conduct many other service projects. But there is still room for more—remember, giving knows no season. This program is designed to take what is already quietly being done across the country and continue to share it with EVERYONE.Good Turn for America will once again focus on three areas of service: food, shelter, and healthy living. Therefore, there will be three subtitles: Scouting for Food, Scouting for Shelter, and Scouting for Healthy Living.  The emphasis for 2010 in the Lake Huron Area Council is again Scouting for Food.  However, we strongly encourage units to get involved in the other areas in addition to Scouting for Food.We also want to know what your unit is doing. The Web site www.goodturnforamerica.org has a place where units can go to report their other service projects. (Don’t forget Eagle Service Projects) Information will be collected again about the types of service projects conducted, the number of members and non-members involved in the projects, and who/what organization benefited from your unit’s efforts. This will help us tell the story of what Scouts are doing for our communities.

Units reporting their service project will be allowed to purchase a Good Turn for America patch. Scouting for Food will take place on two Saturday’s- April 17, and April 24, 2010. Participating youth will once again receive Scouting for Food patches free. (IF reporting deadline is met) Enclosed is the Scouting for Food planning packet.  This packet contains all of the sign-up forms and information about Scouting for Food.  It is your job to present this information to your unit committee and develop a plan for participation.  Your district Scouting For Food Chairperson will be contacting you to help you map out your area.  More information will be available at district roundtables.
