Geocaching First Cache Coordinates Announced

The first geocache in the Lake Huron Area Council “Treasures of Scouting” Series is now ready to be found!  Happy Birthday, BSA!  Stay tuned for more coordinates to be released here next Monday.

Treasures of Scouting - Happy Trails:   N 44° 05.383 W 084° 21.453    Hint:  “Byq Fzbxrl”  (Rot-13 encryption))

This cache has a Difficulty Rating of 2 and a Terrain Rating of 2.5.  Regular size geocache container.  This will be listed at www.geocaching.comExternal Link in the future.  It is being posted here for LHAC Scouts and Scouters first.  The LHAC first-to-find prize is a certificate redeemable for $25 to be used toward any LHAC Event or camp lasting 3 or more days.

This cache was placed by Lake Huron Area Council in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. It is located in the vicinity of a section of the Midland to Mackinac Trail. The Midland to Mackinac Trail, an ancient 210-mile Indian footpath, was restored by members of the Lake Huron Area Council and other volunteers.

The trail stretches from Midland County up to Mackinaw City. For hundreds of years, the trail was used by Native Americans as a seasonal path for hunting, trapping and gathering foodstuffs. The trail is relatively isolated, passing through parts of only two communities -- Cheboygan and Mackinac City. With few organized campsites along the way, hikers and riders are urged to carry water. Camping along the trail on public lands is free, but Michigan DNR permits are needed on state land. Maps are available from the Midland to Mackinac Trail Commission or the LHAC front desk (NOT inside the Scout Shop) for $2.00.  For $3.00 the order can be taken over the phone and the map mailed to you. 1-800-61-SCOUT A trail reopening and dedication was held in 2001 in Midland County. For a Scouting Magazine article titled SCOUTS RESCUE A HISTORIC TRAIL, click hereExternal Link

When placing the cache, we hiked just over a quarter mile along the trail to reach the cache area. The cache started off with Scouting-themed trade items. The cache contains green cards to be returned to the Lake Huron Area Council for a chance to win a limited-edition BSA 100th Anniversary geocoin in our monthly drawing.
