The OKPIK Winter Adventure at Paul Bunyan Scout Reservation

Do you want to learn how to cross-country ski, snow-shoe, Geocaching, track animals, make a snow house and sleep in it. If you answered yes, you need to sign up for OKPIK.

Get your troop/patrol or crew together and sign up for OKPIK. There are 3 levels to choose from. Beginning is Level 1

Level 1 - Basics of winter camping safety. Sleep indoors both nights and learn outdoor cooking and shelter building, show shoeing and cross country skiing during the day. You must be a Boy Scout for 1 year & have attended a campout to attend.  Offered February 10-12 and 17-19, 2012. Cost $45

Once you complete Level 1 you can go on to Level 2 the following weekend or the next year.

Level 2 –Spend your first night indoors, the whole next day and night outdoors in a shelter you build. Learn more about cross country skiing, snow shoeing, Geocaching and animal tracking. Experience the excitement of sleeping outside in winter – and staying warm!  You must be at least 12 years old, 1st Class rank and prior OKPIK Level 1 experience. Offered February 17-19 and 24-26, 2012.  Cost is $45 or sign up for both Levels 1 and 2 and get both for $80.

Now that you have learned the skills and gained experience from Levels 1 and 2, sign up for Level 3 and enjoy a weekend of exploring the Paul Bunyan Scout Reservation as well as a camping experience you won’t get any other time of the year. You just may find out you really like winter camping, cross country skiing and snow shoeing, Geocaching, ice fishing and just “chilling” (pun intended) in a beautiful winter setting. Another plus, there are no bugs.  You will gain confidence in your abilities and you will do things that you didn’t know you could do.

Level 3 – All weekend is spent outdoors. Learn advanced traveling and cooking skills while staying in provided shelters.  Plus all the activities you can cram into 2 days of fun. You must be at least 13 years old, First Class rank and prior OKPIK Level 2 experience. Offered the weekend of February 24-26, 2012.  Cost is $50

Once you have registered, a packet will be sent to you containing a confirmation letter, map, and health form.  Bring your completed health form with you to camp.

NOTE: An Annual Health and Medical Record Parts A, B and C signed by a licensed physician is required for all participants. If you have one that has not expired from summer camp you may use it.

You should schedule your arrival near 7:00 p.m. on Friday night to register.  For any women who are attending the program, special sleeping arrangements have been made.  Food is provided for Friday cracker barrel, Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Sunday breakfast.  Plan to depart on Sunday between 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

No registration form will be accepted without a name and proper fee.

Levels 1 and 2 must have a minimum of 12 participants; Level 3 must have a minimum of 8 participants.  Registration limited to 36 participants for Levels 1 and 2, no limit for Level 3.  Sign up early to reserve your spot! Pre-registration / payment are required by January 23, 2012.

Ask your Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol leader or Crew Leader to add this event to your troop calendar and get your patrol or crew ready to go. If you cannot get your troop or crew to go and still want to go. Get a form and sign up and have your parents bring you to PBSR. If you have no leaders with you we have a qualified and experienced staff, ready and willing to provide adult leadership for any and all scouts that come to any week of OKPIK.  See you in February.
